Laredo VITA Sites Pump $3,781,000 Dollars Into The Laredo Economy
As of April 15, 2010, volunteers at the Laredo VITA sites processed over 1800 Laredo taxpayer returns and brought $3,781,000 dollars into the Laredo economy, said Rafael I Torres, executive director of Azteca Economic Development and Preservation Corporation (AEDPC).” Volunteers at all the Laredo VITA sites made a super effort to help taxpayers file their returns during the Jan-April 15, 2010 tax filing season; IRS certified volunteers filed many returns for taxpayers in anticipation of the April 15 deadline, he added.
The VITA Program offers free tax services to low to moderate-income (generally, $49,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. IRS certified volunteers sponsored by the Laredo Family Economic Success Coalition prepared basic tax returns free of charge to the taxpayer. Local banks and credit unions opened new checking and savings accounts.
The federal government has several resources including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) that can help you and your family. The EITC is essentially a tax credit for low-income workers who meet certain qualifications, which usually means more money in their pockets. If you qualify, you could pay less federal income tax, pay no tax or receive a refund.
